"CITY WALLS" opens First Friday

Anne Teigen's new show at OPUSXII is an excitingly new approach to urban detritus. While visiting Spain she took photos of the graffiti and marking that is everywhere in the cities and was impressed by its dramatic effect. She has transformed her paintings by infusing them with the edginess and undercurrent of urban angst creating a rare beauty quite unlike any we have seen.

Hannah Goldrich at OPUS6IX

Hannah's visit to Italy a year ago with her family inspired her creation of the pieces in this show. She had not expected to be so enthralled by the landscapes, buildings and environments that she saw. She took hundreds of photos with her simple digital camera. She shot ordinary scenes like the clothes line and the home in Ambra, magnificent scenes like the waterscape in Venice, and many photos depicting the magic of the towns in Cinque Terre. When she came home, She had a wonderful record of the richness of their trip. As she perused the images over and over, she felt the strong urge to recreate some of them in her medium-jewelry. She took two of the photos- the clothes line and the plates-thinking she wanted to make a piece of jewelry, she had no idea how she would do it and both pieces were difficult to do.

She chose her images and started working - Each piece took from 4-10 days. Some were very hard to figure out how to translate the feeling of the image into metal which was also wearable. She obsessed how to do the plates - until she found the watch crystals that she finally used. Some of the pieces are especially complicated. The pendant of Rioggiore has over 50 solder connections. The pieces were impossible for her to plan out - She worked without knowing how it would look or whether the whole piece would collapse at the minute. It was very tense and also rewarding. What occurred, which she had not expected, is that by making each piece, she became extremely involved in the image. She saw the parts and the whole of it as she hadn't before and that was thrilling. The whole experience of working on this show was more interesting and fun than she had ever expected.

Recently, we ran into a good buy on an etching press so we purchased it and donated it to Coos Art Museum who has a healthy and excellent permanent collection of fine art prints including etchings, engravings, woodcuts, linocuts, silk screens, and lithographs. We were interviewed by our local TV and the story appeared on KCBY.

Opus6ix artist, Pat Snyder of Coos Bay, has a work accepted into the juried 26th Annual Oregon State University's "Art About Agriculture 2008: The Nick of Time" Tour. The competition attracted 119 applications from artists living in Oregon and Washington. The jurors evaluated 411 images to create final selections consisting of approximately 12 percent of the total entries. Their general evaluations included such specific criteria as: "the alliance between art and agriculture," art that conveys "a strong evocative spirit," and "unique art of high quality."

Art About Agriculture 2008 will have its reception April 8, 2008, 6:30 p.m., at LaSells Stewart Center, Oregon State University, Corvallis. It will travel to be shown during May at the Art Adventure Gallery in Madras, Oregon. Then, in June it will be at the Crossroads Art Center in Baker City, Oregon and finishing in July at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center in Roseburg, Oregon.

I once fired a lawyer because of his choice of artwork. He had let his staff pick out work to hang in the outer offices of his firm. They choose copies of a painter, well known only because of his copies, who's art copyrights are owned by a corporation that trades on Wall Street, and some other copies equally as horrid. They were well framed, but so what. They could have spent far less money on a few originals by people in the community and had an investment as well as a good feeling in the office. (read more)

A night out in the Gallery District

On First Friday February 1st 2008 over 400 people braved the cool night air and the threat of rain to visit the Gallery District . All the galleries were buzzing and sales were good despite the fact that bush is still President.
Robert Melnick and Larry Fong from The Jordan Schnitzer Museum and came to OPUS6IX and thanked, Kirk Lybecker for his gift of his painting , "A Dirge Sung in Brilliant Sunlight", to the permanent collection.

ART TIP OF THE WEEK

PRINTS VS. REPRODUCTIONS

Reproductions are a good way for the artist to make a little money between sales of original work, sell at art fairs, create interest in their work, and be able to afford to remain an artist.

If you KNOW what you are buying, if you want a certain artist's work and can not afford the painting, or if you want an inexpensive way to try out the work before buying it, reproductions are great. Just know that what you are getting is a copy.

One of the most devastating things that can happen to a person who wants to start collecting and decorating with art is to discover that the "print" they bought from that nice gallery is only a cheap copy of an original painting.

Springfield native , Kim Marcucci, (in McKenzie Willamette's first set of triplets) has been selected to be the featured artist in this years Museum Galla in Anchorage, Alaska. It is the Museum's largest fund raiser of the year.Each year locals look forward to the Museum Gala, a night celebrating and auctioning the works of local artists at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. The International Art Gallery features one person shows by Alaskan and other contemporary artists, as well as combined artists’ receptions held by the University of Alaska’s Campus Center Gallery and Grant Hall and Carr-Gottsien galleries of Alaska Pacific University.

Pat Snyder of Coos Bay takes first place and Best of Show at the 2007 Bay Area Artists Association Regional Juried Exhibition

The works of artists from 18 western Oregon counties from Portland south to California border and all points west are featured in the 2007 Bay Area Artists Association Regional Juried Exhibition at the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, OR. There were 351 submissions by 140 artists and the jurors(4) selected 85 works by 57 artists.
Pat Snyder of Coos Bay, an OPUS6IX artist, took first place and Best of Show with
“Coos Pacifica Latitude,” a multilayered acrylic painting from a series inspired by railroad boxcars.
The exhibition will be on display through February 16, 2008.

First Friday in January

Well, it was not the biggest turnout we have had but people were still coming in the doors after 9:00 and wallets were open. Over three hundred people came out on a rainy, cold Oregon winter night to enjoy art and each other.
Wine flowed at OPUS6IX as Mitch from Perugino served an array of fine wines by the glass.
Anne Teigen was there informing people about her paintings. Jerry Dame Sr. held forth in his wonderfully humble way, and Bev Soasey came over from Jacob's Gallery and socialized till closing,
Many newcomers and people who had not been in in a few months were surprised by the new work and by the news of upcoming events, such as the gift to the Museum.
W locked up about 9:30 and headed off to Perugino for late night nosh.

Rich Norman has brought us the most extraordinary wood work. He select fine woods and laminates them, turns them, and creates an individual piece in response to the woods he uses.$$

Dan Corbin, who's work graces some of America's finest collections, came to us during the Hult Center's 25th Year Celebration. Dan was one of the original mask makers whoes work inhabits the interior of the Hult. He now does life size human figures in Bauxite, steel, and other materials. $$$$$
