Abstract vs Non-referential

The idea of "abstracting" an object by repainting it in a way that references that object but allows personal interpretation of the physical, ideological, or conceptual properties of that object is what I consider "abstract"
Non-referential paintings are just made up out of ideas, visually interesting applications, and thin air.

I prefer the latter.
